The causes we find, in order
Loose termination in the ring
Screw terminals relax over years of heating and cooling until the conductor arcs against the plate. That arcing is what scorches the socket and it will not fix itself.
Failed spur or junction connection
One dead point with live neighbours usually means a spur or a hidden junction box has failed upstream. We test back to the last working point rather than replacing the visible accessory.
Overheated high-load socket
Kettles, irons and portable AC units cook the socket they live in, particularly cheap builder-fit accessories. We replace with a properly rated accessory and check the cable behind it.
Switch mechanism worn out
The rocker still moves but the contacts inside no longer meet, so the light works intermittently or not at all. The mechanism is replaced rather than the whole plate where the plate is sound.
